So, you can probably do the upgrade to 8-speed index shifting for less than $100. You can sell the old parts if they are still serviceable to defray the cost of the upgrade, OR save the old parts to put back on the bike when you are ready to sell it, and take the newer parts with you.
Wow. Thanks for all the help. Seems like I have a limitless set of options! My biggest worry was buying a part or a wheel that just didn't fit and having to return things and pay return shipping. But it seems like as long as I am buys sets of components that I know are compatible, then I can almost make any setup work with some tweaking.
