I've found, though, that unless you do the majority of your riding over snow pack or ice, the studs on your rear tire are going to wear down pretty quick across pavement. I use a knobby in back and studded in the front; the lighter weight on the front tire doesn't wear the studs down, and if the rear wheel goes I can just put a foot down, in a pinch. If that front tire goes, though, all bets are off.
