I have to question this rationel. You can get the bottom of the line Mavic Aksium wheels for $230. Or, you can buy the Ksyrium ES's for $1,100. The hub and bearings are just about the same. What you are paying for is lighter spokes, aero spokes, and a lighter rim. Aksium has more spokes, so it might be stronger and last longer.

As for components, again you are paying for weight savings. Longevity? I would like to see the data on that. Pivot points on derailuers are what wear out. Does Dura-Ace have harder pivot pins than Tiagra? All Shimano STI levers are non-rebuildable. At least with Campy you can rebuild the ERGO levers. The only difference between a Record ERGO lever and a Veloce ERGO lever is the Record has ball bearings instead of bushings for the pivot. I think this effects the feel of the shifter more than the longevity. Since both are pivots can be replaced, who knows which one actually lasts longer?

For the top groups, you are paying for lighter weight, more CF bits and the ability to show all your buddies how to get dropped while riding and light, expensive bike...
