I'm not excusing your LBS mechanic but FYI a (properly adjusted) chain catcher would prevent that from happening. I install them on all of my new carbon bikes before they see their maiden voyage. As far as the chain suck it's probably a run-of-the-mill adjustment issue. For example adjusting limit screws when your issue is cable tension is a good way to start throwing/dropping chains.
