I'm the OP. Thanks for the advice. I am amazed that there are so many people in this situation - of course bypass surgery is common nowadays. I think I'll stick to walking for now - I'm less than a week out of the hospital - and maybe the bike in two months. Winter might be a good excuse to postpone things. I do have a stationary bike, fairly upright (old Schwinn exercycle), which might be just the thing.

I had double cabg in may this year and now hold 7 koms on strava im 54 with a full knee reconstruction using a hamstring graft want to do c2c nxt year not sure about day 2 if im up to it but im going to give it my best shot cabg aint the end of cycleing
