Speed oriented training tires?

For the last few years I've been solo riding over potholed roads and my usual tires have been the Michelin krylion carbon and lately the pro4 endurance. Now I am stepping up my riding a bit and doing some quick group rides--roads are pretty mixed.

I am interested in trying a new tire that is a little more speed oriented but not a race tire. My experience with Michelin pro 4 endurance has been positive (except for a somewhat easy to cut sidewall) so I am inclined to try the pro 4 service course. People seem to like the pricier continental 4000s, though. Can people offer any insight into these tires, their merits as a "performance training" tire, and their value? I would be glad to hear other tire suggestions, e.g. is there a Vittoria that I should consider?

Thanks!
