Hmmm. I've got plenty of rims in the $60-80 range that last a VERY long time, like that 20-year old Campagnolo Omega 19 that's stiil doing fine after more than 20,000 miles.

And as has been mentioned, the ride quality loss is not something I want on my road bikes, nor the alignment issues I hear about. Dual pivot calipers with Kool Stop pads continue to work very well for me.

There are certainly types of riding where discs make sense, like cyclocross/mud bikes and others where the braking can be easily compromised by the riding environment.
