The most positive thing about a Thomson post for your purposes is that's it's pretty well engineered to "fail safe", or more specifically bend when overloaded rather than break. So go ahead and stay with the Thomson, and monitor the lowest exposed area for any hint that it's beginning to bend. Note that it can and will hold up to and after an initial bend of a few degrees, but once it starts bending the clock is ticking fast to total failure.
