Hard to plan ahead very accurately when you're talking about a drive that normally takes 90 minutes, but ~10% of the time takes nearly three hours, and the other person is making a similar drive to meet in the middle. Now we can adjust the meeting point and time as needed when one gets stuck or needs to take a large detour.

How did you all manage in the pre-cell phone days? How do I STILL manage without a cell phone?
We wasted a lot of gas on unnecessary trips and side trips.

Even though I've never had one, I do see some value in the things.
Well, as long as your mom can just yell down the basement stairs to you, I'm sure no one else will see much use in you having one either.
