Unless you get the GoPro Black, the GoPros are not really anything special. The Black is a hell of a camera, the White is no better than any random clone IMO, the Silver is a bit better but not really that much.

I had some serious issues with my GoPro when I had it - it was a temperamental pain in the butt and it sometimes stopped recording for no reason. Gopro tech support was very snotty and basically just told me that their camera was so awesome that if I was having problems with it, then clearly either I was an idiot or I was putting junk SD cards in it.
I've always had good luck with the two GoPro's I have, that's why I'm trying to talk my son into getting one of them instead of an "unknown" cam. So far, he's holding off on a decision until after Christmas to see what kind of $$$ he gets with his gifts. Maybe he'll get enough to get a GoPro.

As for the SJ4000, I've looked at them on eBay, and while they sound like they could be a good camera, once again I'd go with a brand that has a pretty good track record behind it and if there's a problem, it can be returned under the warranty. Don't know it that'd be possible with a lot of the "unknowns" sold on eBay.
