The base of the truing stand is pretty narrow and not very stable without the tilt base. It would be very precarious to balance a wheel in the stand without clamping it to something or using the tilt base. You could probably do it...nudity not needed

...but the base makes it easier. If you are really cheap, you could make a base from plywood or you could just put a crowbar in your wallet and buy the damned tilt base
