The correct answer to the OP question is yes. The stand will sit well enough on it base BUT tilted toward the mechanic and also sitting on the knob that adjusts the pincers on each side of the rim. I do this all the time in my basement, being too lazy to carry the stand over to the bench vice and clamp it there. I do like the ability to reduce the stand's foot print and place it on a shelf beneath the work bench when not in use. Andy.
