Lighter spokes have a higher TENSILE STRESS at the same tension. So they have the same tension as heavier spokes, but they are elongated more at that tension. Thus they resist going slack when the wheel is compressed better and the fatiguing that this can cause. Carry on.
To the musicians in the room, lighter spokes are strung at a higher pitch!
