OP, you don't mention price range, and it's quite a spread. If you're on a budget and don't want something vintage you need to fix/rebuild, Surly makes a great bike with full mounts for fenders, front and rear racks, bar end shifters and laid back geometry. It's possibly my best all-rounder I own, as it fits up to 40mm tires with fenders mounted. Comes with a compact front and ridiculously low gearing out back, ready for pulling a heavy load.
Probably the best thing I can say about it is that I keep one at my in-laws for when I visit, as I only have room for one bike there. It does everything decently, if nothing perfectly.
