Go for a pre-1985 Trek sports-tourer, preferably full 531db. They've got the right geometry, clearances for wide-ish tires (32's maybe?) with fenders and are quite well made. Oh, and if the urge strikes, they've got room for 650x38b's. My '83(?) 610 is all done up "a la francaise" with 650b's, aluminum fenders (VO), dyno lighting and a Berthoud bar bag. Rides like a dream, and on flat ground it's every bit as fast as my (10 pounds lighter) Merckx Team SC. Yeah, the extra mass makes for slower climbing, but it's also far more versatile than the EM.
