Well, I come back to my original question. If the cog spacing is different on a 11-sp vs. a 10-, how can the same RD and same shifters work correctly on both? I must be missing something.

You can possibly use the same rear derailleur for both, but there is no possible way a 10 speed shifter will work for 11 speed
