It's true that you burn as many calories sitting as you do standing while going up a hill, so if you are cycling to lose weight and burn calories I would say it doesn't matter if you stand or sit. However if you are looking to strenghten your muscles, sitting and cycling in a relatively higher gear will do just that. If you are looking to get up the hill fast or just trying to get up that last hard part you should stand.
