You can also change axles from solid to hollow. To be honest, I wouldn't bother. You don't want your rear wheel to sit right in the back of the dropouts because that doesn't you to adjust the chain tension which can be fiddly with quick release skewers. Yes yes, I know it can be done and I have a bike here set up that way myself, my experience is that QR only allows an approximate and usually a loose setting of the tension, especially seeing you need to get the tension on the QR set right too. If you have a nutted rear axle, you can walk the rear wheel back to get whatever tension you want, quickly and easily (more quickly and more easily than pfaffing about with QR sometimes). Besides, how often are you playing with your rear wheel?

You also need to consider that modern QR skewers are designed for vertical dropouts and generally do not give enough tension to hold the wheel in place. You need the old school, internal cam skewers. Believe me, it's a real bastard having the rear wheel pull over when riding.

Mate, just buy a set of single speed wheels and give the nutted axles a go. When they start to bug you, ask your lbs to convert the axles to QR - I'm guessing you'll never feel the need.
