Thanks to all for the great info! I also scoped Sheldon B.'s site for advice, which perfectly tallies with yours. I'll be buying some new cogs this week. I plan to start with an 18 in the rear, and reduce it to a 17 or 16 as I build finesse.

Also, since I'm absolutely new to fixed gears AND allergic to falls, I'm starting out in mini-clips (no straps) instead of a more confining pedal. I'm relying on my first-rate front brake to stop on demand. Once I become somewhat comfortable with mounts and dismounts, I'll probably go to regular clips and straps or go clipless. I know Sheldon doesn't recommend this, but it's necessary for my comfort level.

By the bye - Even with the 175 mm cranks, I haven't had any strike issues yet at all! Let's hope I don't have to switch cranks! Thanks again for the good feedback.
