I'm thinking the tour can be split up by days, where the route is preset on the previous evening. That way, the day can be somewhat planned for the time arrived to lunch, dinner. etc So based on your experience, how often have you had to deviate from your predetermined route on a tour? (eg. realized the road is not suitable for riding, decided to take a different route, other reasons)
Google maps and sign posts/asking people work for me. I often take screen shots of google maps on my phone and usually have a paper back up of some sort.
