Be careful if you try to use pliers to "squeeze" the pin back in... I've pinched my fleshy hand in the pliers more times than I care to admit.

Also, I've done this and found that channel-lock pliers can be easier than regular pliers because it can be easier to apply equal pressure if the pliers faces are more or less parallel.
