Actually, you *can* charge an iPad from a standard USB port.
You just can't charge it and *use* it at the same time. i.e. it doesn't charge while the display is lit.
I charge mine all the time from a standard USB hub, and it always complains it can't charge until I hit the button to turn off the display.
