I'm pretty sure that research has shown that people that spend money on experiences over material goods are happier.

I wonder how that translates to material goods for sports/hobbies. Sure, you're not taking a vacation, but you spend a lot of time using said item. I bet the incremental enjoyment is relatively low, but the perception/placebo can be pretty high.
