For those whom were not indoctrinated robustly in USMC lore...Belleau Woods is where the term "Devil Dogs" came from, after a quote from a German officer describing a counter-attack as similar to "dogs being unleashed from the gates of Hell...."
WWI history is really amazing to me, as I read about the battle of Verdun, as a preteen, and kept my interest. There are some outstanding Canadian novels about Canada's role in WWI. One, in particular, outlines the recruiting of native North Americans into the Canadian service, and their roles as sappers and snipers during trench warfare. I can't remember the title, but it also discussed the role of morphine addiction amongst trench soldiers, as well.
