PS. Offset is the distance from the wheel's hub mounting surface to the back edge of the wheel. The center of the tire to turn center at the ground plane is scrub radius.

I can forgive anyone for not knowing that. I can't forgive the amount of stoopidity is takes to hack up a bike like that.
Sorry to correct you since you tried to correct galen...but to set the record straight for the car guys on the board...you are mixing backspacing with offset. Offset is by definition distance from the wheel centerline to hub mounting surface.

The reason why offset and not backspacing is more universally accepted for wheel sizing, is offset takes wheel width out of the equation for purposes of comparison. As far as improving scrub radius and bump steer...these are terms that can't be given justice with random musings. Bump steer is typically aggravated by + tire and wheel sizing due to increase in unsprung weight for example...rarely improved.
