I say yes. You just have to know what you're doing. Riding in lots of traffic is a completely different experience, but as long as you keep your eyes open and take your lane and keep it you'll be just fine.

Is commuting as pleasant as general road riding? Not at first. People in cars do dumb stuff and say stupid things. Here's my favorite story:

I was riding on a 4 lane street that gets steady traffic but not too much, so there's always room for people to switch lanes to pass. At the time there was no traffic at all and I was just cruising along. I heard a horn behind me. No big deal- I had learned to tune out the horns by that point. After a while this guy slowly passed, in the middle of the street no less, pointing at me to get on the sidewalk. I thought it was pretty stupid since the whole road was clear and nobody was behind him, but I got over it because people do stupid things. I kept riding and I noticed the light ahead turning red. I was going to catch up with this idiot, which made me laugh. I pulled up right behind him, wondering if he'd do or say something stupid. Sure enough, when the light turn green he just sat there. By this time other traffic had caught up and there were cars lined up behind me. I just sat there behind him not doing anything because (a) obviously he wasn't the patient type who would sit there all day and (b) if I got all upset he would have won the battle. Eventually he moved on slowly, so I stayed back far away from him. When he got up to maybe 15 mph he slammed on his brakes, thinking I'd run into the back of him. I'm not that stupid, so it didn't work. Obviously out of clever ideas, he flipped me off and sped away. Presumably he was mad because I slowed him down 2 seconds when he had to pass me, and he proceeded to waste about 2 minutes trying to get even. Some people are just ********. I got his license plate number just in case, but I never did report him.

So when stuff like that happens commuting isn't as fun, but eventually you start taking sick pleasure in making the motorists mad. The stupid comments begin to bounce off of your skin.
