Well, lets start with the first bike commute:

Home to Christ the King Elementary School 1973-1978

Route: Three city blocks….
Road conditions / surfaces:….
Residential, classic city grid.
Traffic:….Very light.
Environment: Pleasant….
Hills: Downhill on the way to school, uphill coming home….
Frequency:….as often as mom would let us.
Departure time: 10 minutes before the first bell….
Bike: Holiday Station Stores Stingray knockoff….
Bike name:.…
Cargo: ….School uniform
Helmet / Mirror: They'll be invented someday soon….
Destination:
Parking: ….Bike rack that stretched all the way across the playground. Handlebar hanger type rack
Cleanup: …. Bath once a week whether it was needed or not
Amenities:… Security provided by women dressed in black wielding sharp edged crucifixes attached to rosary chains. Large expanses of asphalt allowing for the constant practice of wheelies. Traffic control provided by 6th graders armed with large florescent flags..
Departure time: ….After last bell, unless you had to do detention.
Alternative Transportation: .….Your own two feet
