I think that if you have the "homeless on a bike" look, you'll fit in better with the locals down there who do not ride bikes just because they want too. Speaking Spanish would kinda help too. The typical bright colored spandex wearing middle aged cycle tourist might as well have a sign on their back saying (in espanol of course) "ROB ME".

tiajuana and ensenada and guadalajara police really steal money from tourists. Why do you think mexican people hide money in their shoe.
On isolated dusty back roads mexicans stop to offer a tired cyclist some water, about every other car does. Where else does that happen.

do not white out the problems. a well informed person will make better choices. The heroin poppys are gaurded with ak47s this is the root of the problem. the estimated heroin production in 2012 was 26 metric tons
