A year ago, a 1972 Nishiki Safari came up on eBay and was parallel posted on Portland, Oregon Craigslist. Before that, I hadn't heard of that particular model. I talked to the owner and went to see it in person. It had these exact panniers. The bike, although touted a "real touring rig" didn't really do it for me and seemed more like a boat anchor with a lackluster component set. It seemed to have roughed out an idea of what a touring bike should be but was clearly a precursor to before the Japanese really perfected touring bikes in the 80's.
