Well, as I mentioned, I just kept the shifters. Initially, this was because I thought they were neat looking shifters and I knew I'd just misplace them if I took them off.

Why not just hacksaw the lever part of the shifters off and just keep the bottom parts screwed on? This'd keep them from digging into your thighs, as well.

I mean, there's nothing I can suggest that's going to look as clean as removing them altogether. But, for a purely aesthetic improvement, it's a lot of work that really limits what the frame's good for.
