For friction, I have used or currently use Campy NR, SunTour barcons, Rivendell silver shifters. My favorite is the SunTour (and I've been using those for 30 years or so).
For index, I have Shimano 6-, 7-, 8-, and 9-speed in use on various bikes. All good.
