I use a trailer for hauling cargo, a flat-bed version.
A road style commuter bike is perfectly do-able.
Look for practical features, tyre clearance, gearing, eyelets.
There are plenty of options between a race bike and a heavy-duty tourer.
eg disc CX bike,
light-tourer
clubman road bike.
