my primary concern is to remove the lump in the skin. I'd much rather have a clean 1mm stab wound to let heal than a 3-4-5mm abrasion that can take MONTHS to heal from riding with a lump there.
Anyway, my teammate is a doctor and I asked his advice before I really tackled it. He advised I go to a doctor out of principle, but that what I was going to do was basically how they would handle it, though with legit equipment and more co-pays.
Most times they go away on their own, but if I get anything bigger than about a pea going, I get the tools.
*edit: also, I bet we agree on about 98% of everything and only get caught up on the 2% where I think you're opinion is not wrong, but I have a slightly different one. Anyway, good to see I'm off ignore!
