I'm not one of those advocates... I think there is a time and place for everything... and cars are handy things to have about from time to time. But I also feel that cars are too much of an intrusion in America... we don't seem to draw the line. Back when the National Parks were first starting, it was thought that some of them should be restricted from automobiles. The idea was that trains could take individuals to the park, and to some locations in the park, but overall the natural setting would be preserved by not permitting cars.
These days there are still isolated "hiking" locations in said parks.
The US seems to have a real issue with limiting access to cars on general principal.
