I guess that is why brands have multiple models - I love the flexibility my 'triple' provides even though I spend very little time using the small crank.
I get to have a relatively close-ratio cassette (12-28 10-speed) while retaining an option for 'easier' gearing for hills/strong headwinds/generally getting tired at the end of a really long ride.
IF my abilities improve enough (possible despite my advancing years!) perhaps I will put a higher value on the benefits of dropping one crank.
