Bikes: heh, like that info would fit here...

From my (admittedly limited) metalurgical knowledge, steel will be at least partially detempered if you heat it above its final tempering temperature. (Wow, how many times can I type temp in a sentence?) I believe that most 4130 is final tempered at around 800 or 900 F, lower than the liquidus of brazing filler.
