The best way is to upload them to a free gallery service or hosting and when you "insert image" put the link in your post. Uncheck the box "Retrieve remote file and reference locally". Anything from 800 - 1200 pix wide shows well.

From what I've seen, this is the important part. Fail to uncheck and you will see thumbnails, as well as have pics rejected for being too large a file size.
I use photobucket as well.
