It is hard to go wrong with SPD's - they have been around forever, and work great. Easy to get in and out of, double-sided, and a wide range of shoes (you can even get SPD sandals!).

You could get a pair of these if you want a wide platform:

Though, I really prefer a true double-sided SPD. I had the A530's (platform on one side and SPD on the other) for a few years, and didn't like having to flip the pedal over to clip in all of the time. Or, on the rare occasions I did ride without my SPD shoes, I'd have to flip the pedal over to get to the platform side.

I have these pedals, and haven't even needed to service or adjust them in 5 years of riding:
