They probably aren't selling your contacts info to shady sources. They probably ask for that info for the social aspect. I.E., they'll check which of your contacts are already on Endomondo. I think you can still use the app even if you don't give it access to that info.

It is going to need access to your "location" so it can use the GPS features, etc.
