A commuter cyclist or utility cyclist is under no obligation towards any LBS to waste their money on pricey unnecessary gadgets. $500 single speed bicycle is no less important then a spandex jockey riding a $4000 carbon machine.
There are several bike shops in my locale, all quite successful, but I doubt that any of them could stay in business selling mostly $500 bikes.
