For some reason I always thought there was more to it.
The reason the paint doesn't come off of machined rims due to braking is that on machined rims there is no paint on the braking surface. All the paint that would be removed by braking is already gone. SO...
Essentially, if you run brakes on non-machined rims, eventually, they will look like they were machined (crappily).
