Sliding/crashing on the track is actually very rare for most people. Occurrences happen less frequently than on the road. Unless you are particularly prone to accidents, I'd say get on as soon as possible. Especially to avoid stiffness setting in. The wounds will weep, so be prepared.

Also, please don't gross people out at the track oozing fluids all over stuff. I was really pissed to see a guy "toughing it out" after getting rashed up and finishing the race day while oozing blood and puss everywhere. That sh*t is nasty and unhygienic.
