I would not wait in the middle of a busy 2-lane road to take a left turn. Too many idiot drivers texting, applying makeup, eating or multitasking. A thousand cars could pass you without any problem, but the 1001th could put you in the hospital or worse.

Having missed the point i will spell it out for ya: You cannot get out of the way of something you can't see. With a mirror you can at least see if there is danger vs be oblivious.
