I have both a studded MTB and a fat bike. For lots of ice the studded bike is better but really not THAT much faster. For ice that has any kind of dirt, snow or anything on it that may add traction the fat tires seem to grab hold of that and do very well. So when the commute is mixed conditions I like the fat bike. Besides like Hypnotoad said, it's just so darn much fun!
