"Spin" bike cadence indication cuts out over 140 RPM -- is this common?

Below-freezing temperatures and accumulated snow have kept me off the bike for over a week now. It was enough that I went to my second-ever spin class yesterday. The experience was fine, but I came there to spin, and the cadence readout had a really annoying propensity to go blank if I spun over 140, which doesn't seem excessive. It's not uncommon for me to exceed that when commuting on my fixed-gear, so during the high-RPM portions of the class I just made it my goal to keep the readout blank. Is this a common limitation for spin bikes, or just for the ones that my gym bought?

Thanks.
