Has Shimano ever made a bad groupset? I've ridden 'SIS' models from eons ago still shift reliably. If you asked me to choose between circa-2004 Dura-Ace and current Tiagra, I'd probably take the Tiagra. Mechanical shifting is very much a 'solved' problem.
