But currently I'm also getting my kids from school with a trailer I hung on my bike, it's just 1 or 2 miles a day... but as it is not to work, I can't count it as commuting? Or should I do it, as I do it regularly and it's actually not a "recreative" ride... it replaces a car ride.

Now the weather is getting better, I'm more often going to ride until the next railway station (instead of the most nearby station), so I get more miles faster.
Strictly speaking, only rides between home and work count as "commuting". But if you happen to pick up groceries or go on a club ride along the way, that would certainly count. I don't know if the "Utility" forum has a mileage thread, but anything that replaces a car ride would count there.
