NY isn't the first city to try city owned and operated rental bikes or bicycle mass transit. This is far from a new idea. Past performance is often a good measure of future events. In this case (CitiBike) it is right on course.
The city does not own or operate the fleet. They made that very clear to steer away from political backlash. They got a huge infusion from Citibank, and repeated funding is not assured. It isn't clear what the future is. I hope they can make it mildly profitable, because it is wildly popular.

I (illegally) loaned my card to my wife last week. She's hooked and immediately signed up for her own membership. I'm pleased, but also a little surprised.
