If I am not middle aged, then I can't officially have a mid-life crisis, thus providing me with adequate excuse to spend obscene amounts of my money on titanium and carbon bicycle components. Otherwise the wife is gonna get ticked. I need an excuse, or I'm in big trouble.
I suspect a lot of titanium has been purchased over the years for exactly this reason.
