A group that I rode with on part of their tour opted to use a 'ride at night' policy across Nevada - stop at one of the towns and sleep there during the day, then start riding when it starts to cool down a bit and keep going through the night into the next morning. Reduces the need for as much water but you do want to have decent lighting.
